Southeast Colorado Legislators' Bill, Local Government Impact Hearings to Be Heard Tuesday

~Anne Boswell

You might have heard the term "unfunded mandates" tossed around. Today, Tuesday, March 31st a bill that would require a hearing to show how bills affect local communities is set for discussion on the Colorado House Floor.

Representative Ty Winter and Senator Rod Pelton sponsored the bill that would allow the leadership of the house and the senate to choose five items to have a hearing on. It would be a time to talk about how legislation would affect local communities.

Legislation passed in both chambers that goes on to become a law will sometimes require the local communities to find the funds to be in compliance with the new law.

Local communities, especially in small rural areas have budgets that are often stretched thin. Legislation mandating extra costs are hard on them. They simply cannot afford it.

House Bill 26-1140, Local Government Impact Hearings is expected to be heard on the House Floor, and is on the agenda. You can watch on the Colorado Channel at this link.

The bill is expected to cause minimal workload to the state. See the fiscal note on the bill pasted below.
