Sheriff Releases Information on Cheraw School Incident

The following is a news release from Otero County Sheriff Shawn Mobley.

04/19/2023 Cheraw, CO - On Tuesday, April 18th at approximately 3:30 PM, OCSO Deputies were dispatched to a report of a disturbance in the 100 block of Elm Avenue. On arrival of deputies, it was determined that a female had been assaulted and the suspect, identified as Carlos Garcia, 40 fled in a white pickup, after ramming the victim's parked vehicle. At some point around the time of that incident, Garcia attempted to gain entry in to the Ag shop at the Cheraw school and then left after an altercation with staff. As deputies searched for the suspect, it was reported that he was armed with a shotgun. He was later located east of Cheraw and a brief vehicle pursuit began and terminated after the suspect drove his vehicle into a field where he was placed into custody without incident. Witnesses to any of the related events are encouraged to contact SGT Randy Garrett with any information you may have. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. "
