You will see the signs for the "work ahead" and it's a move to connect more homes to high speed fiber internet in Bent County.
The work is happening now on Highway 194, west of County road 5.5. The work is part of a grant award to internet service provider SECOM to connect more homes to high speed fiber internet. At the moment, the only options for people living in many areas of rural Colorado are wireless internet or satellite services like Starlink.

In order to support the fiber lines on the electric power poles that Southeast Colorado Power Association owns and maintains, new poles had to be installed.
Interim CEO Mark Hall has stated to the board of directors that SECPA benefits from SECOM's fiber project as aging poles must be replaced.

The cedar poles are being replaced with yellow pine, according to SECPA interim CEO Mark Hall yellow pine are much cheaper than cedar and are readily available.

Hall gave an update during a recent board meeting of the progress.. SECPA owns SECOM, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the electric cooperative. Contractors have been hired to help on the project. Stampede Power Line Services is a company out of Wiley, https://www.stampedeservices.net/powerline?utm_source=chatgpt.com
According to the meeting minutes from several months of board meetings of Southeast Colorado Power Association, the company works a lot to pitch in when contractors are needed.

If you're traveling on H194, expect to be stopped both directions for the duration of the work. Flaggers are present and speeds are reduced through the work zone.
