Because local government still has a say in what happens in their communities, Otero County Commissioners took a step to flex that muscle on Monday.
Otero county passed a resolution to allow the lawful carry of firearms on county property with resolution 2024-13.
County Administrator Amy White Tanabe read the resolution in Monday's County Commissioner meeting. She stated the resolution is in response to Senate Bill 24-131 which didn't allow for concealed carry holders to carry their firearms on sidewalks, parking lots and county buildings. The opt-out of SB 131 means the county will not recognize the bill in Otero County with the one exception of the courthouse because it is a single entry facility and a courthouse.
Commissioner Tim Knabenshue made a motion on the resolution, Commissioner Rob Oquist seconded the motion and the resolution passed.
Bent County Commissioners already passed a similar resolution but it is not uploaded on their website.
