Officer Dunagan's First Court Hearing in Charges of Extortion and Official Misconduct

Las Animas Police Office Thomas Dunagan went before a judge Monday for his first hearing in connection with charges of extortion and official misconduct.
The judge ordered a mandatory protection order for Dunagan to have no contact with the three following individuals:
Michael Nicholl
Justin Stillwell
James Phil Carbajal, II
Dunagan must also be fingerprinted within 14 days with the Bent County Sheriff's Office.
Last week, there was a request for Discovery filed in the case. Discovery in court terms is just a formal request for facts, documents, and witness information. This can be a list of written questions that the other person must answer in writing and attest under oath. It can be email, text messages, photos, or bank statements. It can include requests for admission, which is a set of simple statements where the other side must admit of deny certain things, like a true and false test to clear up what isn't really being argued. And finally a deposition, which is where an attorney asks a witness or the opposing party questions in person while a secretary writes it all down for the record. Sometimes these are even video recorded.
A pre-trial conference is set for November 2nd for Dunagan to return to court.
