(La Junta, CO) -- Otero County Commissioner Tim Knabenshue announced at Monday's County Commissioner Meeting they have received many calls about a possible ICE detention center planned for La Junta.
Knabenshue made it clear the board of Commissioners doesn't know of any plans to create one.
Here's why you might've heard about it.
The ACLU is reporting they have become aware of six sites planned as detention centers, according to information received under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed by the ACLU and ACLU of Colorado in April 2025, identify facilities under consideration as potential ICE detention sites. There are a few reasons it might not be known yet if a site will be created in La Junta.
If the site is planned on private property,
if it's still just an idea or in exploratory phases or
if negotiations are still happening.

If it does happen, the detention center will need to involve the county for resources such as water, permits and to make zoning changes, if needed.
It's not confirmed, however, as of now, no specific plans have been given.
Last year, March 11, 2024, Otero County Commissioners passed Resolution 2024-06 that states Otero County is not a sanctuary county and opposed offering services or shelters to uninvited migrants.
