Today is Labor Day, federal, state, and city offices are closed. Banks are also closed as well as many businesses. The La Junta City Council meeting scheduled for tonight will be moved to tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 8th.
Tonight, gubernatorial candidate Victor Marx is coming to Las Animas. Marx will be bringing his newly named lieutenant governor running mate with him, George Markert. The question-and-answer session rally will be held at the Las Anima High School gym and it set to start at 6pm. The high school is located at 300 Grove Street, in Las Animas. All are welcome.
The Arkansas Valley CASA organization invites everyone to a ribbon cutting Tuesday afternoon at their new location at 308 Santa Fe, corner of 3rd and Santa Fe. There will be refreshments, live music and a chance to see their new facility. CASA serves children in Crowley, Otero and Bent Counties as their voice in court and has served 57 children so far this year. The non-profit organization currently is proud to announce they have 28 volunteers. However, they’re always looking for folks willing to give a small amount of time each month. There’s a fall training session for volunteers starting in October. The ribbon cutting starts at 4pm.
If you’ve been following the news of the Pueblo sewage spill into the water in Southeast Colorado, you might want to hear this. At Tuesday night’s La Junta City Council meeting, Tom Seaba is set to talk about the spill and give a presentation. In addition to that, the council is on the agenda to talk about next year’s budget. As always, the meeting is open to the public at starts at 6pm upstairs in the La Junta City Municipal building on Colorado Avenue. If you want to participate in the public comment section, you will have five minutes to do so.
The CSU Southeast Area Extension is happy to announce a Farm Bill Workshop. The presentation “From Farm Bill to Front Porch” will give you an overview of the Farm Bill. The talk will include the short history of the Farm Bill, facts, Farm Bill Changes with OBBBA, DMC (Dairy Margin Coverage), PLC (Price Loss Coverage), and ARC (Agriculture Risk Coverage). It will be held on September 18th, 2026, at 8am, at the home EC building, 2206 Saddle Club Drive, at the Sand and Sage Fairgrounds in Lamar. This event is free to attend and open to everyone.
The La Junta 9/11 25th anniversary commemoration will be hosting an event to pair youth, student leaders, and community volunteers with mentors on 14 service and revitalization projects. Funded in part by the National 9/11 Day Youth Service Grant. You’re asked to come to honor the heroes and victims of September 11th, 2001 Saturday, at 8:30 at the North Gazebo in the La Junta City Park.
