Fires Could be 100 % Contained Soon

The Rocky Mountain Team three, a group of firefighters called in to help fight the Fort Lyon and Bent's Fort fire had some good news to report today, Saturday. They expect to be finished with the fires, hot spots very soon.


Providing updates to the community through the La Junta Fire Department's social media page they released the following information today:


Firefighters made great progress on the Bents Fort and Fort Lyons fires today. Crews anticipate being able to call both fires 100% contained by the end of shift this evening. Neither fire grew today; The Bents Fort Fire remains 1648 acres and the Fort Lyons Fire is 2926 acres. Firefighters will remain present in the area over the coming days to patrol the fires’ perimeter and address any remaining heat inside the established control lines.

Rocky Mountain Area Complex Incident Management Team Three will return command of both fires to the capable hands of the respective managing agencies at 6:00 p.m. today. The incident management team thanks the community for the warm welcome and the local resources for all of their hard work throughout the incidents.


The Rocky Mountain Incident Management team is made up of firefighters from Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota. They've been using the La Junta Fire Station as a Command Post according to fire information officer Dawn Sanchez.
