Deficiencies Found in Water Tank Could Cost Las Animas—Decision Coming Soon

The City of Las Animas will have to make a decision soon on what to do with the city's water tank.

According to the City of Las Animas 2026 Drinking Water Quality Report, a significant deficiency was detected last year. The report states that it may allow contaminants or disease causing organisms to get into the drinking water. That could cause diarrhea, nausea, cramps and possibly headaches. The findings suggested steps the city could take to correct the problem in the 2.0 MG storage tank that was showing roof deflection. Deflection is when a structural element bends or sags when subjected to a load. This would be general wear and tear from rain, snow and possibly wind.

A company came in to look at the damage and proposed some repair options along with what it will cost the city.

GMS Consultants conducted the study and is preparing a cost analysis to see if it would be smarter to repair the tank or if getting a new tank would be better. The roof structure was found to be water-tight and the treated water contents were not subject to contamination.

The cost study is expected to be completed this month. The City of Las Animas will then decide what action to take and what the timelines for any action would be.
