CBI Investigating Homicide in Trinidad

August 1, 2026 – CBI –  Trinidad, CO –The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently leading an investigation into a homicide that occurred early Friday morning in the 600 block of South Indiana Avenue. The Trinidad Police Department is providing assistance in the investigation.
On July 31, 2026, at approximately 12:19 a.m., law enforcement responded to a report of a physical altercation involving three individuals. Upon arrival, officers located a male, identified as Dominic Garcia (DOB: 3/2/1997), who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Life-saving efforts were attempted by medical personnel; however, Mr. Garcia was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 1:35 a.m.
Atilano Diaz (DOB: 12/9/2004) has been taken into custody in connection with this incident. He is facing charges of second-degree murder (C.R.S. 18-3-103) and prohibited use of a weapon (C.R.S. 18-12-106).
This is an active and ongoing investigation. No further information is available for release at this time to protect the integrity of the process.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
